I love being Indigenous and I am so proud to come from a line of strong Indigenous men and women from the Dehcho. I am Dehcho Dene from the Northwest Territories. it has been a long time since I’ve seen my family as because Of covid the NWT had strong border restrictions with mandatory 14 day isolation periods when going into the NWT. Today we found out borders are slowly being opened up with fully vaccinated people not having to isolate when you return but to follow precaution. it is a wonderful day as I can go to my Home land and go on the river with my family to do cultural activities on the land. We usually take a family trip in our boat to remote area like my fathers cabin up the root river…
which takes about half a days trip by boat to reach. It’s a really beautiful place up there. We usually camp on the land for a night or two, go fishing, cook on the side of the river whatever we catch, listen to stories of where my dads family would travel during the summer, our traditional hunting and trapping lands. I am so excited as I didn’t get to go last year. Yay :) this really makes my heart happy and I am looking forward to it. I hope everyone has an amazing Indigenous day.
